Helping in the Aftermath of Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy has left millions without power (58 million as of this writing), thousands with damaged or destroyed homes, countless lost businesses, many family members missing, and worse, people have lost members of their families. As the cleanup and recovery begins, we’re overwhelmed with the images we’re seeing and the stories we’re hearing. In fact, many friends and colleagues live near our Wiley headquarters in Hoboken, New Jersey. Our Hoboken offices are still closed today and our editor, Susan McDermott is still without power at her New Jersey home. Where do those of us who are fortunate enough to have not been affected begin to help?

There are a number of ways to volunteer or donate to help those in need. You’ll find lists and lists of organizations taking donations for relief efforts online but make sure that the the money you donate is being used to truly help those in need. Charity Navigator and Charity Watch are two sites you can visit to make sure your money is going where it needs to go. If you have suggestions on how or where to help, please feel free to share them!
